Trivia Night! Movie Time? Romance and Loneliness Edition

COLD OPEN:

REMOY: It’s your boy Remoy George Philip the 1st

SAMANTHA:  I’m Samantha Nzessi

R: and this is MASKulinity

S: the show that investigates the performance of MASKulinity in the world today.

R: Okay, so at the end of the last episode…

S: Yeah?

R: You didn’t answer my question about Drake

S: Remoy…

R: Yeah…?

S: Didn’t you hear me?

R: I think so…?

S: What happened to modeling good behavior?

R: Huh?

S: He still doesn’t listen

R: Wow…

S: Speaking of not listening… this is a NOT listening episode!

R: I don’t know what that  means

S: I mean it’s a NOT Drake one. A not-music joint. This… is a MOVIE episode.

R: Wow. I gotta say. That was one hell of a transition.

S: I know! I set a high bar.

R: And?

S: It’s your turn.

R: For what?

S: Your turn to transition. Remoy, get us to the break.

R: Okay, well uhm…. When we come back we talk NOT music… but we are talking the movies. And how they may teach us how to unlearn the performance of Maskulinity. With a hard K.

Stay tuned.

S: Not bad…

[AD BREAK]

SEGMENT 1:

R: And we’re back. Movies, huh?

S: It’s all about performance, baby!

R: I feel this is a good time to refresh. What do we mean when we say the performance of masculinity?

S: We mean that a lot of gender is actually a performance.

R: But how so? Or like why?

S: Good questions. I think it’s like… it’s like we don’t live in a vacuum, right. We’re all living together in this thing called society. Sharing our lives. Going to work, or school together. Going shopping, GOING TO THE MOVIES together. And when we do that we’re all just trying to do our best, right?

R: Yeah totally

S: And a lot of times, there’s these ways of living, or the rules or conventions, that we learn along the way. Like it starts way back when we’re kids.

R: Okay?

S: We’re saying that some of these rules are gender. Starting even with kids, society starts showing us these rules for survival.  Perform this gender this way or that and it’s your best way to get through the day. Being this type of strong is what it is to be a man. Being this type of tough is how you’ll survive. Only perform anger and no other emotions and that’s how you’ll thrive as a man.

R: Okay. I’m guessing Movies is super meta then.

S: Right

R: Like it’s teaching us how to perform as we watch a performance

S: Exactly

R: So you got a movie for me to watch right.

S: Yep

R: And I got one for you

S: Okay?

R: We picked these because there’s something they’re teaching us, good, bad even, about performing gender.

S: Exactly

R: Okay. Well we should tell each other the movies, no?

S: We can…

R: OR?

S: We could make a game of it first.  Alright, Remoy, you ready for “Match Madness”?

R: [ANSWER]

S: Here’s how the game works: There’ll be four questions. Each with two related clues that have to be matched together to solve that question. After I give you both clues, you’ll get 5 seconds to answer.

And at the end of this game all four solutions should tell you what movie this is.

Got it?

[Game Sound Effects: Clock Ticking]

R: Yep

S: Let’s kick things off with our first matchup challenge. This first set of clues is about the lead actor in the movie and what else he’s been in… Not sure if you’ll know though, based on that under a rock livin…

OK, Clue 1: This guy stars as one of Star Wars’ most beloved characters in this eponymous movie, also the name of a famous party cup company.

Clue 2: He also stars in one of your favorites, Oppenheimer… JK, JK

S: Let’s get five seconds on the clock. And go…

5 seconds time limit

S: Time’s up! The correct answer is: Alden Eirenreich

R: [RESPONSE]

S: Great job if you got that one right! Alright this next question is related to where this movie takes place.

Clue 1: Infamous New York street named after a barrier the Dutch built to keep out the UK as well as pirates in the 18th century.

Clue 2: This street also includes an industry that employs over 70% men.

S: And your time starts now… And go!

R: [ANSWER]

S: Got your answer? Let’s see: Wall Street (Apparently the Dutch built a XX to keep people out)

R: [ANSWER]

S: Well done! You’re on fire! This next question is related to one of the themes of the movie that I want to talk about.

Clue 1: A trait that is commonly associated with masculinity in organized groups.

Clue 2: One of our modules in season 3 was on this topic, Jason Rosario was a guest for one episode.

S: Your 5 seconds starts now

S: So the answer is workplace leadership

R: [ANSWER]

S: Last but not least, the title of the movie.

Clue 1: It is a Shakespearean phrase that’s appeared in three of his works, including “The Tempest.”

Clue 2: A definition of this phrase is, “respect for the rules or equal treatment of all concerned.”

S: Last time, buddy. Here’s your 5 seconds.

The answer is Fair Play. It’s about a secret, torrid office romance gone wrong because of a promotion. Actually I got a clip for it.

R: This looks interesting. Okay but pitch me on it. Tell me why I NEED to watch it.

S: I wanted to discuss this because of themes of competitiveness that come up, in particular when women have leadership roles in majority-male industries where they are underestimated. This movie explores how the workplace is changing and the impact it can have on some men.

R: Oh interesting. I could get into this.

S: I think you will. But it’s your turn, Remoy. Give me a movie.

R: I got it.

S:  Is it Love & Basketball?

R: You know me too well, but alas, I got a different movie in mind. And I’m going to give you 10 yes no questions to try and guess it. Okay.

S: I guess.

R: And I’ll give you one hint to get going. Okay. Here’s the clue. It stars one of our hottest, i mean sexiest actors. And he’s not american. Okay go…

  1. Yes
  2. No
  3. No
  4. No
  5. No
  6. No
  7. No
  8. No
  9. No
  10.

S: [10 questions]

R: Okay the movie is… And I HAVE a clip

S: [Responses] Now you need to pitch me. Why should we watch it.

R: I don’t know if this models bad behavior per say. But it shows actually positive masculine behavior, but also something we talked about in our last episode. Loneliness. And what that can look like in a young man. How heart breaking it can be.

S: [Response]

R: Well I guess that’s the end of the show?

S: You know it’s not.

R: Oh yeah we have to go watch these now?

S: Yep. And we’ll come back in a day or three and talk to each other about what we saw. If these movies sold the pitch.

R: Okay, we’ll see if these movies are all they’re cracked up to be. That’s after the break.
